Utilities, correctional facilities, ports, chemical sites, and other critical infrastructure operators face a common challenge: drones can now reach areas that used to be effectively inaccessible from the ground, and there's often no established process for what to do when one shows up. Building a real drone-awareness program means combining three things — detection technology, facility procedures, and the regulatory tools available — rather than treating any one of them as a complete solution.
Detection technology as the foundation
Remote ID receivers give a facility a baseline view of compliant drone activity nearby: what's flying, generally where, and — when included in the broadcast — where the operator may be. Depending on a site's risk profile, this is often paired with additional RF-detection capability to extend visibility toward non-compliant aircraft. The right sensor mix depends on the facility's specific footprint, surrounding terrain, and threat considerations.
Procedures turn visibility into action
Detection only creates value if there's a defined process behind it: who gets notified when an unknown drone is detected, what information they need, and what steps they take next. Facilities that whitelist their own authorized aircraft, define escalation paths for unknown detections, and log activity over time tend to get far more operational value out of detection technology than those that only look at a live map occasionally.
Regulatory tools, used appropriately
Some critical infrastructure operators are eligible to pursue airspace restrictions through processes like FAA Section 2209, which can formally restrict drone flight in the vicinity of a facility. This is a meaningful tool, but it works alongside detection and procedures rather than replacing them — a restriction defines the rule, detection shows whether it's being followed, and internal procedures determine what happens next.
A durable drone-awareness program treats these three elements as connected parts of the same system, built around the facility's specific risk and operating environment rather than any single piece of technology or policy.
