An unauthorized drone in that same airspace introduces a collision risk that firefighting operations are not equipped to manage in real time, which is why wildfire airspace is almost always protected by a Temporary Flight Restriction.
Why this specific mix is dangerous
Firefighting pilots are focused on terrain, smoke, fire behavior, and coordinating tightly with other aircraft in the area — not scanning for a small, hard-to-see drone that has no business being there. A drone sighting near active operations forces incident commanders to choose between continuing air operations with unknown risk or grounding aircraft until the area can be confirmed clear, and grounding decisions directly slow the response to the fire itself.
How incident teams can respond
Because the stakes of a drone incursion are high and the response options (beyond grounding aircraft) are limited, early detection matters. Remote ID receivers positioned near an incident command post or key operating areas can identify compliant aircraft broadcasting in the vicinity, giving commanders faster confirmation of what's in the air and, when available in the broadcast, information about where an operator may be located.
This kind of visibility supports the incident command process — it doesn't replace the judgment calls that commanders and pilots make about when it's safe to resume flying. Detection is one input into a decision that ultimately rests with the people running the operation.
