Airports sit at the intersection of two things that don't mix well: manned aircraft operating on tightly managed procedures, and a growing volume of drone activity in the surrounding airspace. Airport operations teams increasingly want a way to see what drones are doing near the airfield — not to replace existing air traffic control systems, but to add a layer of situational awareness that didn't exist before.
Building situational awareness near the airfield
A practical starting point is deploying Remote ID receivers around the airfield perimeter and approach paths to detect compliant drone broadcasts in real time. This gives operations staff a live view of drone identity, position, and altitude for aircraft in range, which can be cross-referenced against expected activity, LAANC-authorized areas, and any facility-specific procedures for drone incidents.
LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) already gives the FAA and airports a way to manage authorized drone flights near controlled airspace. Detection technology complements this by showing what's actually happening in the airspace, including whether unauthorized aircraft are present in or near areas where drone activity is restricted or requires coordination.
An important limitation
Drone detection systems are not radar, and they are not a substitute for air traffic control. They identify aircraft that are broadcasting Remote ID (and, depending on configuration, some additional RF activity), but they don't provide the certified surveillance, separation, and control functions that ATC systems are built and regulated to deliver. Airports should treat drone-detection tools as an added layer of visibility for operations and safety staff, integrated alongside — not in place of — existing air traffic procedures.
